Music Association has just released “Legendary Conversations
(With A Texas Disc Jockey)” compiled by Tracy Pitcox. The
three hundred page book contains over eighty interviews that Pitcox
has conducted during his twenty year radio career at KNEL in Brady,
Texas.
The interviews were transcribed just as they were heard on the
radio with some dating back to 1989 all the way through 2007.
“Legendary Conversations” brings to life surprising
stories and historic anecdotes with Country Music performers.
Readers discover:
*Dolly Parton was not accepted by Country Music fans when she
initially replaced Pretty Miss Norma Jean on the Porter Wagoner
Show. Fans would call out for Norma when Dolly was trying to sing.
*How Merle Haggard’s verbal and physical abuse to his third
wife Leona Williams almost caused her to contemplate giving up
the music business.
*Grand Ole Opry star Billy Walker’s close call with death
when he traded airline tickets with Hawkshaw Hawkins. Hawkshaw,
Patsy Cline and Cowboy Copas would die the following day when
their plane crashed near Camden, Tennessee.
*Why Garth Brooks’ revealed in 1989 that his career desire
was never to get too big that he could not sit and talk with his
fans.
*Tammy Wynette discussing that her only regret was never winning
a duet award with her ex husband George Jones.
*Chubby Checker giving Ernest Tubb the credit for his decision
to enter the music business.
“Legendary Conversations” features several interviews
with many entertainers who are no longer with us including Tammy
Wynette, Billy Walker, Bobby Helms, Boxcar Willie, Chris LeDoux,
Del Reeves, Floyd Tillman, Rose Maddox, Goldie Hill, Grandpa Jones,
Johnny Duncan, Justin Tubb, Keith Whitley, Skeeter Davis, Mrs.
Jim Reeves and Sammi Smith among others.
The book delves into not only the individual artist’s careers,
but also the golden age of Country Music. Many of the featured
artists were the moving forces in the early creation of the billion
dollar Country Music industry.
“I had been fortunate to visit with many of the legendary
figures in Country Music” Pitcox said. “I was visiting
on the Bill Mack radio show last year and Bill had just released
his biography. We were talking about preserving all the great
history from Country Music’s past. I started thinking about
all of my old interviews and decide that now was a great time
to use them in a book format. It took a year to complete the book.”
Pitcox also adds notes at the end of every interview discussing
memories of the interview or his relationship with the performer.
“Legendary Conversations” also contains discussions
with Alan Jackson, Andy Williams, Cal Smith, Charley Louvin, Doug
Kershaw, Ferlin Husky, George Jones, Hank Locklin, Hank Thompson,
Little Jimmy Dickens, Johnny Bush, Johnny Gimble, Justin Trevino,
Kitty Wells, Kris Kristofferson, Mark Chestnut, Mickey Gilley,
Moe Bandy, Ray Price, Tom T. Hall, Wanda Jackson, Willie Nelson
and more.
The book also features ninety photos and letters from artists
including Buck Owens, Gene Autry, Johnny Rodriguez, Eddy Arnold,
Pee Wee King, Bill Anderson, Charley Pride, Ralph Emery and the
only time the “three Hanks” were photographed together-Hank
Williams, Hank Thompson and Hank Snow.
Country Music Hall of Famer Loretta Lynn contributed the liner
notes for “Legendary Conversations”. Lynn wrote “Meeting
someone who so loves and is so devoted to pure Country Music is
amazing. I knew I’d met one of these people several years
ago when I met Tracy. Tracy’s love for traditional country
is evident in all he does to promote artists as me. He is truly
an asset to all that loves this music. I’m just lucky to
call him a dear sweet friend.”
“Legendary Conversations” is an insider’s guide
to the music industry and the much loved and respected individuals
who created the music.
